Miami Meeting Could Reopen Ukraine-Russia Negotiations

Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, is expected to travel to Miami this week for a meeting with Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s special envoy. The high-stakes encounter comes as peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow have stalled over territorial disputes. The active phase of negotiations has been paused, partly due to the ongoing military conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Umerov, who leads Ukraine’s negotiating team, may depart for Florida in the coming days. Bloomberg reported the planned meeting, citing anonymous sources. While the official agenda has not been disclosed, a White House representative declined to comment on the details, speaking on condition of anonymity. This visit follows earlier expectations that Witkoff and another U.S. envoy, Jared Kushner, would travel to Ukraine—though that trip has yet to be confirmed.

Sticking Points in the Peace Process

Negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow face major hurdles. Russia demands that Ukrainian forces withdraw from the Donetsk region, while Kyiv insists it will not cede control of its territory or recognize occupied lands as Russian. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that both American envoys were invited to Ukraine. Umerov’s spokesperson, Diana Davityan, declined to comment on the reported Miami meeting.

The Miami talks could prove pivotal in reviving the diplomatic process between Ukraine and Russia, as both sides struggle to find common ground. Meanwhile, the broader international landscape—especially the U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran—may shape the dynamics of these negotiations. Continued American support remains a critical factor in Ukraine’s efforts to protect its interests on the global stage.
