UNESCO Monitoring Mission in Kyiv
A UNESCO monitoring mission, conducted by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), has arrived in Kyiv to evaluate the conservation status of World Heritage sites. The mission focused on assessing damage from shelling, particularly at the Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. These sites are of immense historical and spiritual significance, not just for Ukraine but for global cultural heritage. The team inspected specific locations within the sites' buffer zones to determine the extent of damage and the factors affecting their preservation.
The Saint Sophia Cathedral sustained damage on June 10, 2025, due to shelling. Particular attention was paid to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, where damage was recorded following a massive attack on the capital on the night of January 24. The strike hit a gallery leading to the entrance of the Far Caves, damaging several doors and blowing out a number of window frames.
Condition Assessment and Next Steps
ICOMOS aims to evaluate the conservation state of these landmarks to determine the necessary next steps for their protection.
"This is part of the heritage of the entire civilized world, which requires special attention during wartime," noted Marina Soloviova.
In addition to the primary sites, the mission also reviewed several other buildings in Kyiv, including:
- The building at the corner of Sofiyivska Street, 20/21 and Volodymyrska Street, 21/20, which was granted the status of a newly discovered cultural heritage object last year;
- The building at Olesya Gonchara Street, 17/23, where it is recommended to dismantle the added upper floors to bring the building's height in line with the adjacent historical structures;
- The building at Velyka Zhytomyrska Street, 32, which is currently undergoing restoration;
- Part of the Landscape Alley.
Assessing the condition of World Heritage sites is a critical step in their preservation, especially amid the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. The restoration and protection of cultural heritage can play a key role in rebuilding national identity and sustaining cultural life. The UNESCO mission underscores international support for Ukraine's efforts to safeguard its cultural legacy, which is vital for future generations.
