From Mariupol to Kyiv: a young drummer conquered the capital and received praise from stars

Від Маріуполя до столиці: молодий барабанщик підкорив Київ і отримав визнання від зірок.

How 11-year-old Kyrylo Kushchenko from Mariupol became a musician

Kyrylo Kushchenko, who is only 11 years old, has already made a name for himself as a talented drummer. Born in Mariupol, he started learning the drums at the age of two: according to him, his inspiration came from a television broadcast where he saw drummers perform. Initially, the boy would bang on pots, and later received an electronic kit as a gift. In March 2022, their home was destroyed by the occupiers, and the family was forced to evacuate. Now Kyrylo lives in Chornomorsk, where he continues to develop his gift.

He began music lessons at the age of four: first, he took classes from teachers in Mariupol, and later he continued studying with a tutor from Odesa.

Triumph in Kyiv and recognition from professionals

After moving, Kyrylo performed in the capital, where he won two grand prizes and one first place at a concert. 'I wasn't nervous, I just looked at the drums and reminded myself that there was no need to worry. Sometimes I noticed how the girls danced, and that supported me,' shares the young musician. This was his first performance after evacuation, and it received high praise from both the audience and professionals.

Kyrylo's talent did not go unnoticed: he was invited by famous Ukrainian artists, including Liuliakin and Pivovarov. The latter even suggested playing together.

The boy's mother, Lydia Kushchenko, recalls the evacuation:

'We saw how people were trying to leave in their cars. Only one road was open. It was a rescue — nothing else to call it. We were risking it all because everything was mined. It was very frightening.'

Despite leaving all his instruments in Mariupol, Kyrylo continues to pursue music. His story inspires many: it shows that even in the most difficult circumstances, one can find a way to creativity.

This story is not just about personal achievements, but also about the challenges faced by Ukrainian children due to the war. Kyrylo's determination and talent serve as an example for other kids who have endured similar trials. Support from the Ukrainian music community will likely help him unlock his potential and continue to inspire those around him with his playing.

The story of Kyrylo Kushchenko is not the only one that inspires youth to create. The Verovka Choir also actively supports young artists by organizing collaborative projects and performances in frontline cities. These initiatives help preserve cultural life and inspire a new generation of musicians even in difficult times.
