The Remarkable Karst Lakes Known as 'Blue Windows'
Within the National Nature Park of Northern Podillia in Lviv region lie extraordinary karst lakes famously called the 'Blue Windows.' These water bodies display striking blue-green hues, a result of water dissolving carbonate rocks in the surrounding cliffs. The group consists of three lakes—two situated close together and a third located a short distance away. Their vivid coloration shifts with changes in weather, seasons, and lighting, influenced by the unique karst geology, water composition, and sunlight filtering through the transparent water.
The most prominent lake, 'Blue Window,' measures approximately 43 meters long, 24 meters wide, and reaches depths of up to 14 meters. These lakes are also known by various other names, including:
- Blue Well
- Turquoise Lakes
- Blue Eye
- Khovanets
Fed by underground springs, the water level in these lakes remains stable year-round, preventing freezing during winter months. Located about two kilometers from the village of Yasyniv in the Zolochiv district of Lviv region, they rest on the northern edge of the Podillia Upland amidst the hills of the Voronyatsky Ridge. Visitors can reach the lakes by foot or bicycle via nearby hiking trails, including the route from Pidgirtsi to Pidkamin.
Autumn Crocus: The Rosmarin Colchicum
In addition to the 'Blue Windows,' September marks the blooming of the striking purple autumn crocus (Colchicum), locally known as rosmarin, across the Carpathians. This plant is widespread in Ukraine, especially in Polissia, Podillia, and most abundantly in the Carpathians. It is important to note that all parts of the rosmarin contain the highly toxic compound colchicine, posing significant risks to humans. Thus, the 'Blue Windows' and rosmarin flower exemplify both the breathtaking beauty and hidden dangers found in this region.
The National Nature Park 'Northern Podillia' plays a crucial role in Ukraine's conservation efforts, protecting unique natural landscapes and biodiversity. The growing popularity of the 'Blue Windows' attracts tourists, supporting the development of eco-tourism in the area. However, awareness of potential hazards, such as poisonous plants like rosmarin, is essential for visitor safety. Responsible environmental stewardship and ecological education are key to preserving this natural heritage for future generations.
