Heartbreak in the Euro 2026 Semifinals
Ukraine's junior national football team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Germany in the semifinals of the 2026 European Championship. The match was a decisive battle for a spot in the final, but despite the loss, the Ukrainian side still secured a place at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Playing at the host stadium, Ukraine took the lead in the 43rd minute through a goal from Vitaliy Hlyut. However, Germany leveled just before halftime, with Otto Stange scoring in the 45+2 minute. The decisive blow came deep into stoppage time when Onyeka found the net in the 90+1 minute, sealing the win for the German team.
Road to the U-20 World Cup
Ukraine finished top of their group in the tournament's preliminary stage, while Germany placed second in their quartet. Despite the semifinal loss, Ukraine became one of four Euro 2026 playoff teams to qualify for the global event. Azerbaijan will host the 2027 U-20 World Cup.
This marks the second consecutive U-20 World Cup appearance for Ukraine's junior squad—a first in the nation's history. The team previously won the world title in 2019. In 2025, they reached the Round of 16 before being eliminated. Across four World Cup tournaments (excluding their 2019 triumph), Ukraine has consistently exited at the Round of 16 stage. Their debut at the competition came in 2021.
Though the semifinal loss stings, the junior team demonstrated a commendable level of play throughout the tournament, making this a pivotal moment in their development.
By earning a ticket to the U-20 World Cup, the squad will have the opportunity to continue their growth and compete on the international stage. Given their past successes—especially the 2019 title—Ukraine's young talents have every chance to deliver a strong performance at the upcoming world championship in Azerbaijan.
While the defeat to Germany in the Euro 2026 semifinals was a tough blow for Ukraine's U-19 team, their journey doesn't end here. Securing a spot at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup showcases their resilience and potential for future success on the international stage.
