United Airlines Flight Diverts Back to Las Vegas Amid Hijacking Threat
On Saturday, October 24, a United Airlines flight departing from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas en route to Newark was forced to turn back shortly after takeoff due to a reported hijacking threat from one of the passengers. The pilot received information about a potential attempt to seize the aircraft, prompting a quick turnaround over Arizona. The plane, carrying 157 passengers, returned to its departure airport roughly 10 minutes after leaving.
To ensure a safe landing, the pilot informed air traffic controllers that the plane needed to burn off excess fuel because it was too heavy for a normal touchdown.
“We apologize for the delay, but the aircraft is heavier than it should be for landing. We are in the process of reducing fuel load,”the pilot explained.
Following the plane’s safe arrival at Harry Reid Airport, authorities arrested 25-year-old Dante Miln from Clifton, New Jersey. He faces charges related to making criminal threats or providing false information about a terrorist act. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with United Airlines confirming the flight’s secure return to Las Vegas.
Separate Flight Diverted Due to Severe Weather
On the same day, a Ryanair flight bound for the United Kingdom was forced to alter its course and land in Spain because of Storm Boelo, which brought wind gusts reaching up to 84 miles per hour (approximately 135 km/h).
This United Airlines event highlights the critical importance of onboard security and the crew’s swift response to potential threats. In an era of heightened aviation safety concerns, rapid action following a hijacking warning ensured passenger safety and maintained trust in air travel. The ongoing investigation and arrest underscore the serious approach taken toward any threat, reinforcing the commitment to passenger protection.
This incident is reminiscent of a recent event involving a co-pilot suspected of attempting a terror attack on a Flydubai aircraft, which was also forced to make an emergency landing due to security concerns. Such occurrences underline the persistent challenges faced by airlines in ensuring passenger safety.
