Strikes on Russian Territory
Ukrainian drones attacked two targets inside Russia in the early hours of August 4: the Wildberries logistics hub in Leningrad Oblast and the Syzran refinery in Samara Oblast. Fire Point, the manufacturer of the FP-1 drone, confirmed the strike on the Wildberries complex near Krasny Bor in Tosnensky District. Leningrad Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko also confirmed damage to the warehouse close to Krasny Bor. The hub covers roughly 154,000 square meters and has capacity to store more than 57 million products at one time.
The Syzran refinery, part of Rosneft, also caught fire overnight on August 4. It processes 8.9 million metric tons of oil per year, which equals more than 3% of Russia's total refining capacity. The plant produces gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel and bitumen, supplying fuel to Samara, Saratov and Penza oblasts as well as parts of central Russia. It also fuels airfields and military units in the Central and Southern Military Districts. The refinery is located more than 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Earlier Attacks
This was not the first such incident. On the night before July 12, drones already hit the Syzran refinery and sparked a major fire. There was also a reported failed attack on a Wildberries warehouse in Moscow Oblast, with drones failing to reach the target. According to Fire Point, Wildberries infrastructure has been used to move military and dual-use goods, and the complex provides storage, sorting and distribution for Russia's Northwestern Federal District.
The attacks point to an escalation in the Ukraine-Russia conflict and to the growing use of drone technology against critical infrastructure. Because the Syzran refinery plays a strategic role in fuel supply, the strike could affect both military and civilian needs in the region. Logistics hubs like Wildberries are also becoming significant targets due to the war-related goods they handle. The events of August 4 may therefore have long-term security and economic consequences for both countries.
