Ukraine Launches Overnight Attacks on Russian Strategic Sites
Ukrainian forces carried out a wave of strikes against several strategic targets on Russian soil during the night of 1–2 August. Among the locations hit were the Saratov oil refinery, the Engels airfield, and an oil depot in the Kaluga region. Ukraine's General Staff confirmed that the strikes connected, with a fire breaking out at the Saratov refinery. The facility is able to process roughly 7 million metric tons of oil per year, while Engels serves as home base for Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers.
In addition to the factory and airfield, Ukrainian military units struck the Lyudinovskaya oil depot in Lyudinovo and a site used for storing, preparing, and launching attack drones near Navlya in the Bryansk region. The General Staff also reported a hit on the Engels airfield itself, which led to another blaze.
Separate Strikes Hit Russian Drone Command Centers
On 1 August, Ukrainian forces also attacked drone control posts used by Russian forces in the following areas:
- Olkhozhemchugova (Kursk region)
- Berestka (Donetsk region)
- Sichneve (Dnipropetrovsk region)
- Yablukove (Zaporizhzhia region)
Governor Roman Busargin of the Saratov region confirmed the drone attack on Saratov and Engels and said that two people had died.
Responding to the operation, Russia's Defense Ministry said that on the night of 1–2 August its air defenses shot down 635 Ukrainian drones that were reportedly trying to attack Russian territory, including in the skies above 12 regions, Krasnodar Krai, and the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
The latest Ukrainian strikes signal that the conflict is far from winding down and show a shift toward new tactics. They also point to a growing Ukrainian presence on Russian territory, which may change the shape of the fighting.
Moscow's statement reflects the increasing tension between the two sides, raising the possibility of further escalation.
The recent attacks on key Russian facilities highlight a significant escalation in Ukraine's military strategy. This comes on the heels of Ukraine's strikes against oil refineries and tankers, indicating a focused effort to disrupt Russian logistics and resources. As the conflict intensifies, understanding these developments is crucial for grasping the evolving dynamics of the war.
