New Patriarch Elected for Ukrainian Church Following Filaret's Death

В Україні обрали нового патріарха після втрати Філарета.

Leadership Transition and Funeral Rites

Following the death of Patriarch Filaret, a group of bishops from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP) has announced the election of a new patriarch. This move has been met with criticism and accusations of provocation from within the church community. Patriarch Filaret passed away after a severe illness, having been hospitalized on March 9. He had celebrated his 97th birthday on January 23, 2026. This leadership transition occurs within a complex and often divided Ukrainian Orthodox landscape.

An extraordinary session of the UOC-KP's Bishops' Council was held on the evening of March 20 and the morning of March 21. Eight bishops participated in the meeting, which was partly conducted online. Archbishop Andriy of Bila Tserkva declined to participate in the vote, while two bishops voted remotely. Through a secret ballot, Archbishop Nykyta (Kobzar) of Sumy and Okhtyrka was unanimously elected as the new Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine.

Contested Funeral and Bishops' Accusations

The farewell rites for Patriarch Filaret took place at the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral. The viewing lasted throughout the evening of March 20 and all day on March 21. The funeral service and burial were held on Sunday, March 22. The St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, where the patriarch was to be interred, was surrounded by police.

Filaret's will specified St. Volodymyr's Cathedral as his final resting place. Archbishop Nykyta stated that 'the act of electing the Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine as the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate was announced at the extraordinary session of the Bishops' Council of the UOC-KP.'

Simultaneously, a group of UOC-KP bishops issued a joint statement accusing the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) of forcibly seizing the patriarch's body. They claim that 'the OCU leadership, using forceful and godless methods, took the body of His Holiness Patriarch Filaret from the hospital and transported it to St. Michael's Cathedral for the funeral service.' The bishops also stated they were 'asked to leave the cathedral and were threatened with police intervention, arrests, and the use of force against the bishops.'

Ultimately, the new circumstances surrounding the patriarchal election and Filaret's funeral continue to raise concerns and questions within the church community. The bishops emphasized the importance of preserving the UOC-KP 'as an independent spiritual institution, with no intention of joining any other church structures.'

The situation reflects the intricate dynamics within Ukraine's ecclesiastical environment. Conflicts between different branches of the Orthodox church in the country, notably between the UOC-KP and the OCU, could have significant repercussions for religious life and society at large. Observing further developments is crucial, as they may impact the unity and stability of the Ukrainian Orthodox community.
