Ukraine's New Labor Code

The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has formally registered a draft of a new Labor Code, a major legislative initiative designed to modernize the country's labor laws and align them with European Union standards. This move represents a significant deregulation of existing labor legislation, which, according to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, culminates over two years of development work by the Ministry of Economy. This reform is part of Ukraine's broader post-war reconstruction and integration efforts with the EU.

Key Reforms in the Proposed Code

The proposed labor code introduces several fundamental changes. Specifically, the draft legislation includes:

  • The mandatory use of a written employment contract, establishing a crucial formal basis for the relationship between employees and employers.
  • A reformed vacation system, increasing the minimum annual paid leave entitlement to 28 days.

These changes are intended to improve working conditions and rest periods for employees. Consequently, the new Labor Code could mark a substantial step forward in the evolution of Ukraine's labor relations, bringing them closer to European norms.

The draft code reflects the government's concerted effort to adapt Ukrainian labor law to European standards, a process that may enhance the country's investment climate and overall work environment.
