The government extended the operation of thermal power plants and district heating plants until 2028 due to the war

Уряд продовжив термін функціонування теплових електричних станцій і мереж теплопостачання до 2028 року в умовах воєнних викликів.

Continuation of thermal power plants and district heating plants in Ukraine

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has extended the operation period of thermal power plants (TPPs) and district heating plants (DHPs) until December 31, 2028, due to the war. This decision became a necessary step in connection with the martial law in the country, which has impacted the energy sector.

Previously, parts of the energy blocks were to be stopped at the end of 2023 due to ecological requirements of the European Union. However, on December 18, international partners provided Ukraine with the opportunity to make an exception during the martial law period, allowing for the continued operation of TPPs and DHPs.

Assistance from Lithuania and energy stability

Moreover, on December 22, Ukraine received equipment for thermal power plants from Lithuania through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The transfer operation lasted for 11 months and included 149 deliveries with a total weight of 2.3 thousand tons. This will contribute to improving energy stability in Ukraine in the conditions of war and will provide the necessary resources for the operation of energy facilities.

The continuation of TPPs and DHPs until 2028 indicates the government's focus on ensuring energy security in the context of a prolonged war. Addressing ecological requirements against the backdrop of martial law highlights the importance of international support that allows Ukraine to adapt to new realities. The receipt of equipment from Lithuania also demonstrates cooperation between EU countries and their readiness to support Ukraine during a difficult period.
