Establishment of Uzhhorod University
On March 6, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued Order No. 215-r, formally creating Uzhhorod University. This new institution is the result of a reorganization that merges Uzhhorod National University and Mukachevo State University. This consolidation is part of a national effort to streamline higher education and strengthen regional academic hubs in western Ukraine.
The new university will operate under the jurisdiction of Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science. The reorganization will be carried out within the existing budgetary allocations designated for the Ministry. Students from both original universities and their structural subdivisions will continue their studies without interruption.
"Students will continue their education at the University and its separate structural subdivisions in their chosen specialties and under their existing funding sources."
The Ministry of Education and Science has been tasked with executing all necessary organizational measures related to establishing the new university and reorganizing the two institutions. This move is seen as a significant step in developing the region's educational system and aims to provide more effective specialist training.
Streamlining Educational Infrastructure
The creation of Uzhhorod University is part of a broader strategy by Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science to optimize the country's educational infrastructure. The merger is expected to positively impact education quality by concentrating resources and fostering greater competition among institutions. It may also strengthen scientific research and facilitate deeper integration into the international academic community.
