New Labor Legislation of Ukraine

The Government of Ukraine has approved the draft of a new Labor Code aimed at initiating a labor market reform that lasted over two years. This code is an important step in modernizing labor legislation, which today operates based on the Labor Code of 1971.

Among the main changes introduced by the new Labor Code are the increase in the number of types of labor contracts from 6 to 9. This will allow for more diverse forms of employment and provide greater flexibility in labor relations. In addition, the document defines 8 signs of labor relations, which aims for better regulation of labor rights and obligations.

A significant innovation is also the equalization of electronic documents to paper ones in labor relations, which will simplify the procedures for processing and exchanging documents. The minimum wage will now be determined as a percentage of the average wage, which may ensure a more equitable level. The code also establishes the right to flexible forms of work that meet modern labor market requirements.

Main Innovations of the Labor Code

  • Risk-oriented approach to labor inspection checks to increase control efficiency.
  • Student labor contract to support the professional development of youth.
  • Implementation of more than 30 directives of the European Union.
Yulia Svyrydenko, a representative of the Ministry of Economy, noted that the adoption of the new code is one of the key steps for implementing the Employment Strategy until 2030.

The next stage will be the consideration of the draft in the first reading in the Parliament hall, which will determine the next steps in implementing the new labor legislation norms.

The adoption of the new Labor Code is an important event for Ukraine, as it aims to adapt labor legislation to modern economic realities and European standards. This creates the conditions for improving labor conditions, increasing employment, and protecting the rights of employees. Further steps towards the implementation of the code could significantly affect the labor market in Ukraine, particularly through the introduction of new forms of employment and easing administrative procedures for employers and employees.
