New Funding Boost for Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities
Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has authorized an extra 10.84 billion hryvnia to strengthen the country’s defense posture. These funds come from the remaining balance of a special state budget account, which was built up through personal income taxes and licensing fees from gambling and lottery operations. The money was collected under a dedicated program launched in 2025, following the transfer of responsibilities from the now-dissolved Ministry for Strategic Industries to the Ministry of Defense.
How the Money Will Be Allocated
Out of the total sum, 9.05 billion hryvnia is earmarked for purchasing new weapons, upgrading existing military equipment, and carrying out repairs. The remaining 1.79 billion hryvnia will be invested in Ukraine’s domestic defense-industrial base, funding cutting-edge technology, factory expansions, and sector reforms.
The Defense Procurement Agency (DOT) has also signed contracts for a record number of long-range 155mm artillery shells, achieving a 16% cost saving through competitive bidding. Six manufacturers emerged as winners, and all have finalized delivery agreements with Ukraine’s defense forces.
This Cabinet decision underscores a focused effort to bolster national defense amid ongoing challenges. The allocation of substantial resources for military modernization and support of the defense industry reflects a strategic approach to safeguarding national security.
Procuring new equipment and weapons, along with engaging Ukrainian producers in defense contracts, could significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The recent approval of 10.84 billion hryvnia for defense initiatives aligns with Ukraine's broader strategy to enhance military capabilities.
