Introducing a Groundbreaking Bone-Anchored Prosthetics Initiative
The Ukrainian government has initiated a two-year pilot program providing fully funded bone-anchored prosthetic treatments. This innovative approach involves surgically implanting a device directly into the bone, allowing for the attachment of an external prosthesis. It is especially beneficial for individuals with short or misshapen thigh or upper arm stumps who cannot effectively use conventional socket prostheses. The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) will cover both the surgery and inpatient rehabilitation expenses, while the Social Protection Fund for Persons with Disabilities will manage the creation and fitting of the external prosthetic components.
Funding Breakdown and Treatment Process
The NHSU finances not only the surgical procedure but also the bone-anchored fixation system and hospital-based rehabilitation, with reimbursement for each fixation system amounting to 1.2 million UAH. Meanwhile, the Social Protection Fund handles the production, customization, fitting, and maintenance of the external prosthesis. Only state and municipal healthcare facilities approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine are authorized to provide these services.
Each case will be evaluated individually based on assessments from two certified prosthetic providers and medical professionals. The final decision on eligibility for bone-anchored prosthetics will be reviewed by a medical commission and requires approval from the Ministry of Health. Patients must provide informed consent after being fully briefed on the procedure, potential risks, and alternative options. Following surgery, patients will undergo continuous medical monitoring throughout the program's duration. This pilot initiative will remain active for two years from the date the regulation takes effect.
