Introducing the 'eReceipt' System

The Ukrainian government has initiated a nationwide rollout of the 'eReceipt' system, a digital fiscal document. This innovative project aims to digitize the retail sector, save businesses money, and reduce environmental impact. Following a card payment, the eReceipt automatically appears in the user's banking app, simplifying the process for consumers. This move aligns Ukraine with a growing global trend of digitalizing financial transactions to increase efficiency.

A pilot program is already operational with four banks: PrivatBank, PUMB, VST Bank, and monobank. It is also being implemented in retail chains including Aurora, Fora, and Auchan, as well as at Ukrnafta gas stations. According to the State Tax Service, Ukrainian businesses generated over 9 billion paper receipts last year. These receipts are printed on thermal paper containing bisphenols, which cannot be recycled, making the environmental benefit a key driver for the shift to digital.

Benefits of the Digital Receipt

For shoppers, the digital receipt will always be accessible in their banking app after payment, simplifying returns, exchanges, and warranty claims. Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated,

"This will help businesses save millions of hryvnias annually. After all, printing a single receipt costs 7 kopiyok. Furthermore, it will benefit the environment."
By transitioning to e-receipts, the government expects to cut printing costs and lessen the negative impact on the environment.

The implementation of the 'eReceipt' is a significant step in modernizing Ukraine's economy and adopting cleaner technologies. This project not only streamlines interactions between consumers and businesses but also directly reduces the use of disposable materials, a relevant goal amid global environmental challenges. With the initial phases showing positive results, further steps will likely involve expanding participation to other banks and retail networks, promoting wider adoption of the eReceipt among the public.
