Government Meets with Agricultural Sector
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has held a working meeting with representatives of the agricultural business. The discussions focused on critical issues for the upcoming planting season, including war risk insurance and support for farmers operating in conflict-affected areas. The government is launching an insurance program that will provide compensation for losses of up to 30 million hryvnias, alongside recovery grants that can reach 16 million hryvnias to replace damaged equipment. These measures are part of a broader effort to sustain Ukraine's vital agricultural sector, a cornerstone of the national economy and global food supply.
Targeted Aid for Farmers Near the Front Line
Special attention was given to farms located within 20 kilometers of the frontline. A dedicated list is being compiled in the State Agrarian Register to enable targeted support programs for these high-risk territories. Work is also continuing on draft law No. 14117, which aims to compensate farmers whose land is used for constructing defensive fortifications; this bill has already passed its first reading in the relevant parliamentary committee.
On March 14, European agricultural operators in Ukraine established the International Farmers' Association of Ukraine (IFA), which unites 63 family-run farms. These farms operate on land ranging from 300 hectares to 22,000 hectares each, with a combined total area of 275,000 hectares. Among the initiatives being implemented are:
- A program to supply farmers with electronic warfare systems to counter enemy drones;
- Ensuring the unimpeded export of grain;
- Protecting workers during planting and harvest seasons.
The topics discussed underscore the urgent need to support the agricultural sector during wartime, as farmers in conflict zones face immense risks and operational challenges. Government initiatives like insurance and grants are crucial steps toward strengthening the agricultural economy and ensuring national food security. The formation of the international farmers' association further highlights the importance of industry collaboration in overcoming the severe difficulties confronting Ukrainian agriculture.
As the government implements new support measures for farmers, it is crucial to understand the evolving criteria for identifying high-risk farmland. This will ensure that assistance is effectively targeted, allowing for a more robust response to the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.
