Experimental Project Tests Long, Three-Trailer Truck Combinations
The Ukrainian government has greenlit a pilot initiative backed by the Ministry of Development, introducing extra-long tractor-trailer units with three linked trailers on the Kyiv-Odesa highway. These multi-trailer trucks, known in Europe as longer combination vehicles, consist of a truck towing several trailers or semi-trailers in sequence. Similar transport solutions are already widely deployed across Europe, particularly in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Officials anticipate that the project will cut costs related to fuel, vehicle maintenance, and overall freight transport. By enabling larger cargo volumes per trip, the system is expected to reduce the total number of journeys required. This efficiency should also help distribute road wear more evenly. A key environmental benefit is the anticipated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, achieved by making fewer trips to move the same amount of goods.
