The Role of Drones on the Front Line
Political analyst Yuriy Romanenko has stated that drones have become the primary means of destruction on the battlefield, compensating for a critical shortage of traditional ammunition. He expressed this view in a monologue, emphasizing that the mass-scale drone adoption by the Ukrainian army was a forced response to the severe challenges faced by its military forces. This shift highlights how modern warfare is increasingly defined by asymmetric technological solutions.
Romanenko noted that while the ammunition situation has improved somewhat, the need for additional resources remains acute.
“The development of our drones was a consequence of us lacking, for instance, mortar shells and artillery rounds on the battlefield. While waiting for shipments, we sought cheap ways to compensate for this deficit,”he said. The analyst also cited statistics indicating that the majority of frontline casualties are now caused by drone strikes.
“We now have statistics showing that 80, or even 90%, of the losses occurring on the front line, on both our side and the Russian side, result from drone strikes. And that is simply a fact,”Romanenko stressed.
Shell Production and Drone Development
Against this backdrop, the European Union is ramping up artillery shell production, which could positively impact Ukraine's ammunition situation. Experts believe that continued development of unmanned systems will remain a crucial element in meeting military needs and strengthening the country's defensive capabilities on the front. The conflict has demonstrated that drones are not merely supplements but have become central to battlefield tactics.
The situation with drones and ammunition in Ukraine reflects broader trends in modern warfare, where technological innovation has become a key factor for success. Given the high level of losses recorded from drone attacks, Ukraine is expected to continue investing in unmanned technology to maintain its defensive posture. Simultaneously, the EU's increased shell production could become a vital step in providing the Ukrainian army with the necessary resources to confront frontline challenges.
As the reliance on drones intensifies, the establishment of a new long-range strike center in Ukraine signifies a pivotal shift in military strategy. This center aims to enhance the capabilities of drones capable of hitting targets at distances of up to 150 kilometers, further redefining the dynamics of warfare.
