Reburial of OUN leader Andriy Melnyk and his wife Sofia Fedak-Melnyk

On May 25, the reburial of Andriy Melnyk, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and his wife Sofia Fedak-Melnyk took place at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. This event marked a significant milestone in restoring historical justice and honoring prominent Ukrainian figures.

Attending the ceremony, Ukraine's third president Viktor Yushchenko highlighted the importance of bringing home the remains of other notable Ukrainians. He specifically called for the return of the ashes of:

'For centuries, the enemy sought not only to destroy us physically but also to scatter our memory across the world. Our leaders, our hetmans, thinkers, and warriors became prisoners of foreign cemeteries. And today, standing on the sacred hills of Kyiv, we must clearly realize: the Ukrainian Pantheon of Heroes will not be complete until everyone who forged the shield of our independence returns home.' - Viktor Yushchenko
  • Supreme Otaman Symon Petliura,
  • Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi,
  • Leader Stepan Bandera.

Yushchenko stressed the vital need to gather Ukrainian heroes on native soil, stating: 'A people that fails to bring back its heroes risks losing its future. But a people that gathers its sacred relics together becomes a monolith that no one can ever break.'

The event also included a central funeral service for Andriy Melnyk and Sofia Fedak-Melnyk at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Iryna Gerashchenko, co-chair of the European Solidarity faction, called for inviting all former heads of state, alluding to the fifth president Petro Poroshenko.

This occasion was marked not only by the return of Andriy Melnyk and Sofia Fedak-Melnyk's remains but also by a call to restore memory of other outstanding Ukrainians whose contributions to Ukraine's struggle for independence remain relevant today.

The reburial of Andriy Melnyk and his wife symbolizes not just the restoration of memory for Ukrainian figures but also a crucial step in the process of national identity formation. The figures highlighted by Yushchenko, such as Ivan Mazepa and Stepan Bandera, underscore the need to preserve historical memory, which holds significance for modern Ukraine. Memories of such heroes inspire new generations and urge unity in the fight for the nation's independence and dignity.

In light of Yushchenko's call for the repatriation of Ukraine's historical figures, it's worth noting that the country has recently received permission to rebury another prominent nationalist leader. The reinterment of Yevhen Konovalets represents a crucial step in acknowledging and honoring Ukraine's past.
