Expert: Ukraine Cannot Sustain a 700,000-Strong Army, Proposes Military Alliance with Poland

Експерт: Співпраця з Польщею — ключ до зміцнення обороноздатності України.

Ukraine's Defense Challenges

International policy expert Ilia Kusa, speaking on political analyst Yuriy Romanenko's broadcast, argued that maintaining a large peacetime army is economically unsustainable for Ukraine. He stated that a proposed troop level of 700,000 is unrealistic for the Ukrainian economy, which cannot bear such costs. Kusa emphasized that even in the best of times, Ukraine's economy could not support an army of that size. This assessment comes as Ukraine continues to rebuild its economy while facing a prolonged and costly war.

A Proposed Solution

To overcome this challenge, the expert proposed a path of regional military-economic cooperation, specifically with Poland. He believes that sharing the common costs of maintaining a large army between the two nations becomes entirely feasible. According to his proposal, each country could maintain an army of 300,000-350,000 personnel, which would combine to create a 700,000-strong force for the coalition.

'Sharing the common costs of a large army between two countries becomes entirely realistic, because we could manage 300-350 thousand, and the Poles could also manage 300-350 thousand. But then there must be a guaranteed alliance that we together field 700 thousand people on the battlefield.' Ilia Kusa

The expert also noted that there are 'many supporters of this path of self-sufficiency.' However, he stressed that implementing such an approach requires enormous resources, and therefore Ukraine will still have to seek reliable alliances. A military pact with Poland, a key NATO member and one of Ukraine's strongest supporters, would represent a significant strategic shift.

Ilia Kusa's statement highlights the defense challenges Ukraine faces, particularly given limited resources and the need for effective military cooperation. In an environment of growing security threats, strategic alliances like one with Poland could become a crucial element for ensuring military capability. This could also open new opportunities for economic collaboration between the countries, which in turn would strengthen regional stability.

As Ukraine navigates its defense challenges, the insights from military leaders about Russia's ongoing threat become increasingly relevant. Understanding the broader context of regional security dynamics is essential for evaluating the viability of proposed military alliances and ensuring Ukraine's strategic stability in the face of a persistent adversary.
