After Two Months in a Floating Plastic Bottle, a Crab Off Japan Was Too Big to Escape

Finding a Crab in a Plastic Bottle

On 15 July 2022, scientists from Hiroshima University spotted a live Portunus sanguinolentus crab inside a plastic bottle floating in the sea near Japan. The animal was probably still young when it entered the bottle, and it is thought to have lived there for around two months, eating fish larvae and algae. During that time it grew too large to escape through the bottle’s narrow neck, which had an opening of only 24 millimetres. Plastic pollution is now one of the most visible threats to marine life around the world.

The bottle was found roughly 500 metres from Sesoko Island, Okinawa. It was made of high-density polyethylene, had previously contained wine, and had no lid. Inside, apart from the crab, there were fish larvae that had gathered around the bottle, as well as algae growing within it. DNA testing of the crab’s stomach contents showed that it had been feeding on fish, including Canthidermis maculata and Abudefduf vaigiensis.

Scientists also found barnacles of the species Lepas anserifera attached to the bottle, allowing them to estimate how long it had been drifting at sea.

Wider Environmental Concerns

This is not a one-off event: similar crab entrapments have been observed in Japanese waters before. In the researchers’ assessment, the crab grew while trapped, which highlights the broader problem of plastic waste in the oceans. The report documenting the case was published on 12 August at 17:33. A crab found inside a plastic bottle is a clear illustration of the serious pollution crisis facing today’s oceans. It is yet another warning about how human activity can harm marine ecosystems.

Keeping a close watch on such cases may help in developing strategies to reduce pollution and protect marine flora and fauna.
