First Discovery of a Denisovan Forearm Bone in China Sheds Light on Limb Structure

Discovery of a Denisovan Radius Bone

For the first time in China, scientists have uncovered a Denisovan forearm bone, offering new insights into the limb anatomy of this extinct human species. Dating between 190,000 and 70,000 years ago, this find complements previously known Denisovan skeletal remains. The cave where these bones were excavated lies along a significant migration corridor in Asia, highlighting the extensive range of Denisovans from Siberia all the way to the Taiwan Strait.

Details and Significance of the Find

Researchers examined over 60,000 bone fragments, identifying five specimens as Denisovan through zooarchaeological mass spectrometry and protein sequencing. These included:

  • two skull fragments;
  • two teeth;
  • a forearm bone fragment.

The recovered radius exhibits a robust head and neck similar to Neanderthals, yet its overall proportions and cross-sectional shape align more closely with those of modern humans.

The skull pieces discovered display thickness characteristic of Homo heidelbergensis and archaic East Asian populations. Situated on a migratory route connecting the Tibetan Plateau to East, South, and Southeast Asia, the cave’s location fills a critical geographic gap, proving that Denisovans inhabited regions stretching from Siberia and northeastern China to the Taiwan Strait and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

This radius bone discovery marks a crucial advance in understanding human evolutionary history, deepening knowledge of Denisovan anatomy and adaptations. It reinforces their expansive geographic spread and their biological connections to other archaic human groups like Neanderthals and Homo heidelbergensis. Continued research may illuminate the complex interactions among early human species during prehistoric times.
