Russian Drone Strikes 24-Story Building in Odesa, Lodges at 15th Floor

Російський безпілотник вдарив по багатоповерхівці в Одесі, пошкодивши 15-й поверх.

Drone Incidents in Ukraine: A Growing Threat

In Odesa, a Russian drone struck a 24-story residential tower, embedding itself in the facade at the 15th floor. According to the State Emergency Service (SES), the primary danger came from the drone’s high-explosive incendiary warhead, which contained over 50 kg of explosives and failed to detonate. The building was at serious risk, but coordinated efforts by rescue workers and police successfully eliminated the threat.

Emergency teams and police quickly neutralized the unexploded drone. A National Police explosives expert used an aerial lift to manually disarm and remove the warhead at height. Afterwards, SES chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) specialists inspected the drone fragments for hazardous substances and checked radiation levels. Sappers then transported the warhead for controlled destruction.

'A Russian UAV struck a 24-story residential building and became lodged in the facade at the 15th floor. The most dangerous part—a high-explosive incendiary warhead with over 50 kg of explosives—did not detonate. The building was under threat,' the SES stated.

Drone Neutralization in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv, on May 20, 2026, bomb disposal experts also neutralized a Russian attack drone that was perched atop a tree. Local residents alerted emergency services, highlighting the public’s growing awareness of hazardous objects.

'We remind you: if you notice suspicious items, do not approach, do not touch, call 101 or 112!' the SES added.

These incidents underscore the critical importance of safety and emergency preparedness.

Given the escalating threat from unmanned aerial vehicles, cases like these demonstrate the need for:

  • increasing public awareness of potential dangers;
  • the importance of rapid emergency response;
  • implementing training programs and information campaigns to reduce risks for civilians, especially in areas where the situation remains tense.

The incident in Odesa highlights a disturbing trend in Ukraine, as drones pose an increasing threat to civilian safety. Recently, a similar situation occurred in Mykolaiv, where bomb disposal experts successfully neutralized a Russian drone lodged in a tree. Such events emphasize the urgent need for public vigilance and the importance of swift emergency response. For more details on the Mykolaiv incident, see the recent drone neutralization in Mykolaiv.
