5G Pilot Program Kicks Off in Odesa
The Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation, in collaboration with mobile operators, has initiated a pilot 5G testing phase in Odesa. This project aims to evaluate the performance of already installed equipment under real-world conditions and is a key step toward a full-scale 5G rollout once martial law ends.
"The 5G pilot officially began in Odesa. Together with mobile operators, we are currently monitoring the equipment’s operation in live conditions. This will enable the country to smoothly transition to the new communication standard as soon as it becomes feasible post-martial law," the Ministry’s press service stated.
5G Speeds and Coverage Across Ukraine
During testing, data transfer speeds have exceeded 1 Gbps, with average rates between 600 and 700 Mbps. The introduction of 5G helps relieve the burden on LTE networks, improving overall connection quality. Ukraine currently operates 340 5G base stations, and over 30% of Ukrainian smartphones are 5G-capable. More than 3.8 million unique users in cities including Lviv, Borodianka, Kharkiv, and Kyiv are already accessing 5G services.
Previous 5G trials took place in Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka, with nearly 1.5 million Ukrainians using the network during testing phases. Across the country, over 300 base stations support the pilot 5G network. On the first day of testing in Kyiv alone, users downloaded more than 25 terabytes of data. To facilitate broader internet access, the Ministry plans to reduce the cost for providers to use electric poles for network infrastructure from 10 hryvnias to just 1 kopeck. This change is expected to bring internet connectivity to 1,043 communities currently without access.
Implementing 5G promises Ukrainians smoother remote work experiences, uninterrupted online education, and instant access to essential digital services. If users face issues connecting to 5G, they are advised to:
- Ensure the 5G option is enabled in 'Cellular Data' or 'Mobile Network' settings;
- Update their smartphone’s software;
- Disable any power-saving modes;
- Restart the network connection and reboot their device.
The launch of this pilot in Odesa marks a significant milestone for Ukraine’s digital modernization efforts during the ongoing conflict. Widespread 5G adoption after martial law lifts will greatly enhance communication quality and access to modern digital services, which are vital for the country’s economy and social wellbeing. Additionally, lowering infrastructure costs will stimulate further development of Ukraine’s digital landscape, opening new opportunities for business, education, and healthcare sectors, ultimately improving everyday life for citizens.
