Starlink Speed Restrictions in Ukraine
Ukraine has imposed a speed limit on the Starlink satellite internet service, setting the maximum at 161 kilometers per hour. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the system underwent testing both in civilian areas and near active frontline zones. He expressed hope that SpaceX and the U.S. government will resolve the technical issues behind these limitations and lift the speed cap.
"We understand how to revert this restriction technically. We hope SpaceX and the U.S. administration will take care of it," Zelensky stated.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the matter, promising to investigate the speed restrictions. "I haven’t heard about this, but I will look into it," he said, adding that he might need to speak with Elon Musk if the issue remains unresolved. Trump expressed confidence in Musk’s intentions, noting, "He wouldn’t do anything harmful, and he’s incredibly smart—otherwise, Starlink wouldn’t even exist."
Dialogue with the U.S. and the Strategic Role of Starlink
On October 20, 2026, Zelensky held discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio regarding the supply of ballistic missile interceptors, as well as the operation of Starlink and Starshield systems, which are key for early warnings of Russian attacks. The Pentagon affirmed that Ukraine’s access to Starshield remains fully intact and unrestricted.
Meanwhile, on October 22, Ukrainian military sources indicated a possible restoration of full-speed Starlink terminal functionality, though official confirmation from the U.S. is still pending. Zelensky awaits further updates from Mark Rubio on this issue.
The current speed restrictions stem from technical challenges that, according to the Ukrainian president, can be addressed by SpaceX and U.S. authorities. Given the ongoing conflict with Russia, uninterrupted and high-speed connectivity through Starlink is crucial for both military operations and civilian needs. The involvement of prominent figures like Trump and ongoing U.S.-Ukraine talks underscore the global significance of Starlink’s role in supporting Ukraine during this critical period.
As discussions surrounding the operational capabilities of Starlink continue, Senator Tillis has initiated an inquiry into the issues affecting Ukraine's defense efforts. This inquiry underscores the growing concern over the implications of Starlink's limitations and the urgent need for a resolution to ensure robust support for Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts.
