Forecast for Rising Water Levels in Ukraine

Authorities in Ukraine are forecasting a rise in water levels and potential flooding in several regions from February 20 to 25. This situation is driven by a thaw and precipitation, which will weaken ice and cause rivers to swell. Such spring thaws are a recurring seasonal hazard in the region, often impacting infrastructure and agriculture.

Regions Under Official Warning

The following oblasts and areas have been placed under official warning:

  • Kirovohrad
  • Mykolaiv
  • Odesa
  • Kharkiv
  • Cherkasy
  • Volyn
  • Polissia

Yellow and orange danger levels have been forecast. The most significant water level increases are expected in these rivers:

  • Savranka
  • Kodyma
  • Velyka Vys
  • Chorny Tashlyk
  • Mertvovod
  • Inhul
  • Southern Buh (stretch from Oleksandrivka to Mykolaiv)
  • Udy
  • Lopan
  • Merlo
  • Siverskyi Donets (at the Zmiiv and Izium monitoring posts)
  • the Pripyat River sub-basin

Potential consequences include the partial flooding of agricultural land, commercial properties, and communication or power lines in riverside areas. In an emergency, citizens should contact the emergency services at 101.

Issuing warnings about rising river levels is a critical step in mitigating potential impacts that could harm local communities and regional economies.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and monitor updates from local authorities. Taking preventative steps to protect property and ensure personal safety in case of flooding is strongly recommended.
