Ukraine Expands 'Humane Education and Volunteering' Program with Seven New Lessons for High School Students

Enhancing an Educational Movement

In Ukraine, the 'Humane Education and Volunteering' program has been broadened by adding seven new lessons tailored for high school students. This expansion brings the total number of educational materials in the project to 21, all officially endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The curriculum addresses volunteerism, ethical treatment of animals, environmental issues, ethics, and civic responsibility.

The newly introduced lessons emphasize hands-on activities, research, and collaborative teamwork. They engage students in fact-checking, problem analysis, group discussions, and proposing solutions. Key topics covered include:

  • volunteering
  • civic responsibility
  • humane animal treatment
  • plant-based nutrition
  • climate change
  • ethical challenges of the future

One lesson specifically introduces students to the five freedoms of animals and principles of responsible pet care.

Impact on Youth Engagement

During the 2025–2026 academic year, over 2,000 teachers have adopted the initiative, reaching more than 24,000 students nationwide. In October, a nationwide lesson on compassion was held to mark World Animal Day. The program also offers an English-language debate class and an interactive lesson called 'Code of the Future,' which transports students to the year 2050 to explore ethical and climate-related challenges. Additionally, the social campaign 'Adopt, Don't Shop!' is being developed to raise awareness about adopting homeless animals.

The 'Humane Education and Volunteering' project was recognized as a finalist in the 11th Annual Shorty Impact Awards under the Animal Rights & Welfare category. This initiative plays a crucial role in nurturing compassionate values among young people and encouraging their active participation in society.

The recent growth of this program reflects an increasing emphasis on humanitarian values within Ukraine's education system. By addressing vital social and environmental subjects, these lessons aim to shape students’ awareness and foster responsible attitudes toward animals and the environment. Such efforts have the potential to inspire broader societal change by cultivating a generation committed to active and responsible citizenship.

The expansion of the 'Humane Education and Volunteering' program highlights the growing emphasis on ethical education in Ukraine. This initiative aligns with other impactful projects, such as the recent recognition of UAnimals and Suziria Group at the Shorty Impact Awards, showcasing a collective effort to foster compassion and responsibility among youth.
