Ukraine has become the first country in Europe where the Starlink Direct to Cell technology pilot has been implemented. It allows Kyivstar subscribers to send SMS even in places without mobile coverage: the smartphone automatically switches to satellite signal. This is reported by Ministry of Digital Transformation.
This solution is designed for protracted power outages, remote villages, or areas where networks are damaged due to attacks. Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized that the launch of Direct to Cell is an important step for the country's infrastructure in wartime conditions. According to him, «we continue to develop innovative solutions, as reliable communication under any circumstances is a key priority».
Direct to Cell Technology: how satellite communication works
To send an SMS via satellite, a smartphone with Android and 4G support is required. iPhone 13 and newer users will gain access after the next update. Communication works only outdoors, and the service is provided within the existing tariff without additional charges.
CEO Kyivstar Oleksandr Komarov noted that the service is being launched with the most essential feature - SMS.
«In critical moments, every message can be a matter of life and death», - he added. The company plans to expand functionality: in the future, Direct to Cell will support voice calls and mobile internet.
SMS without connection: why the feature is important for Ukrainians
In wartime, blackouts, and attacks on energy infrastructure, stable communication has become a security issue. The satellite SMS technology allows notifying relatives or emergency services even when traditional networks are unavailable. Ukraine became the first among European countries to launch Direct to Cell in partnership with Starlink, which enhances the resilience of digital infrastructure.
What is needed for Direct to Cell to work:
-
Android smartphone with 4G (LTE) support
-
Be outdoors to receive satellite signal
-
Active Kyivstar tariff without additional payment for the service.
Previously, we reported that Kyivstar is disabling 3G in six regions.
