Ukraine's First Combat Use of Interceptor Drones Launched from Aircraft
Ukraine has recorded its first successful combat deployment of an air-launched interceptor drone system. A twin-engine An-28 transport aircraft released a P1-SUN unmanned aerial vehicle from its onboard platform, which then destroyed an Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drone. The operation took place recently, with footage of the engagement surfacing online on April 24, 2026, as reported by the Ukrainian outlet Glavcom.
Operating as a mothership, the An-28 carried both its crew and the P1-SUN interceptors. This emerging capability marks a significant step for Ukraine’s armed forces in countering aerial threats. As one official noted,
“It’s time to showcase the new feature of our transport aircraft. The video shows an excellent development by our engineers, allowing our An-28s to now transport not only personnel but also P1-SUN interceptors, enabling them to shoot down aerial targets over Ukraine.”
