Ukraine Imposes Summer Truck Restrictions to Protect Roads from Heat

Україна вводить обмеження для вантажівок влітку, щоб зберегти якість доріг в умовах спеки.

Seasonal Traffic Limits for Heavy Vehicles

Ukraine has introduced seasonal traffic restrictions for heavy vehicles on national roads due to rising air temperatures. The rules apply to trucks weighing over 24 tons or with an axle load exceeding 7 tons, and are enforced when temperatures climb above +28°C. These measures aim to prevent damage to road surfaces during hot weather.

Authorities—including the National Police, Ukrtransbezpeka, local governments, and road service operators—are working together to designate temporary parking areas for heavy vehicles while the restrictions are in effect. The State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine urges drivers and carriers to factor these temporary limits into their route planning and to obey all road signs.

Exceptions to the Restrictions

Several categories of transport are exempt from these rules:

  • Vehicles responding to emergency situations,
  • Transport of dangerous or perishable goods,
  • Transport of live animals and poultry,
  • Military transport and cargo shipments for defense purposes.

Earlier this June, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine allocated an additional 3.5 billion hryvnias for repairing local roads. Since the start of the year, road crews have already restored 14 million square meters of pavement, reflecting the government's ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure.

Enforcing seasonal limits on heavy truck traffic is a key step in preserving Ukraine's road network, especially during extreme heat. These measures help maintain pavement quality, which can enhance road safety. Combined with recent investments in road repairs, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to upgrade the country's transportation infrastructure.

In addition to the newly imposed traffic restrictions, the government has recently increased funding for local road maintenance. This financial boost of 3.5 billion hryvnias aims to enhance the quality of roads across the country, ensuring they can withstand both seasonal challenges and increased traffic demands.
