Magnetic analysis offers a fresh way to expose counterfeit ancient pottery

A magnetic test to tell ancient pottery from fakes

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, part of the University of California, San Diego, have developed a new technique that uses magnetism to detect forged ancient ceramics. The research team, led by postdoctoral researcher Yoav Vaknin, examined the temperature at which viscous remanent magnetization is erased. They found that genuine pottery older than 1,000 years requires heating above 112°C to lose this magnetization, while modern imitations lose it at lower temperatures. The results were published in the journal PNAS. For museums and archaeologists, the ability to distinguish authentic artifacts from forgeries is essential, and this magnetic approach provides a promising new tool.

Inside the research process

During the experiments, the team heated samples in 10-degree steps starting from 50°C. The study included several types of objects:

  • ancient vessels
  • items bought from souvenir shops near Jerusalem
  • confirmed fakes

By applying micromagnetic models, the researchers set 112°C as the distinguishing temperature for ancient pottery. The technique could have broad applications in museums, archaeological investigations, and courtroom cases, especially because forged artifacts are a persistent problem in regions such as Israel, China, and Mexico.

Co-author Lisa Tauxe, a geologist, also stressed the importance of the work, describing fakes as "a constant problem in Israel, China, Mexico—almost every region of the world where archaeological sites exist, particularly in places where deceit flourishes." She noted that this study is a significant step toward strengthening the authenticity of artifacts displayed in museums and sold on the antiquities market.

The new method could have a major impact on archaeological science and museum operations, making it much easier to separate original pieces from clever imitations. This, in turn, may help safeguard cultural heritage and reduce illegal antiquities trafficking. As demand for ancient objects continues to grow, the importance of such technologies is likely to increase.
