New Dinosaur Species Unveiled
An international team of researchers from Romania, Hungary, and Italy has formally described a new genus and species of dinosaur named Kryptohadros kallaiae. Its fossils were uncovered in the Carpathian Mountains of southern Romania, specifically within the continental sediments of the Densus-Ciula Formation in the Hateg Basin. The partial skeleton recovered includes skull fragments, ribs, tail vertebrae, and part of a hind limb. For over a hundred years, similar remains were mistakenly attributed to the known species Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus.
Evolutionary Ties Among Dinosaurs
Analysis reveals that Kryptohadros kallaiae, Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus, and Tethyshadros insularis together form a distinct evolutionary family called Telmatosauridae. All three species evolved in isolation on islands that once existed in what is now southeastern Europe. This discovery confirms that at least two closely related genera of duck-billed dinosaurs coexisted in the same region during the Late Cretaceous period.
“Complete skeletons with skull elements, vertebrae, and limb bones are extremely rare in the Hateg Basin. Usually, only isolated bones are found here, and they were previously assigned to the already known Telmatosaurus.”

The study detailing this find was published in the peer-reviewed journal Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
The identification of the new dinosaur species Kryptohadros kallaiae highlights the importance of re-examining paleontological discoveries in regions with rich geological histories, like the Hateg Basin. This breakthrough could significantly reshape our understanding of evolutionary relationships among dinosaurs that inhabited the ancient islands of Southeastern Europe. Research of this kind not only refines dinosaur classification but also opens new avenues for studying their habitats and adaptations to changing environments.
This recent discovery adds to the growing body of evidence regarding the diversity of duck-billed dinosaurs in the region.
