A study released on July 20 warns that human activity threatens to erase 21.2% of the evolutionary history of flowering plants. Conducted by an international team of biologists, the research analyzed 335,497 known plant species. Of these, 9,945 were classified as EDGE species—meaning they are both evolutionarily distinct and at high risk of extinction. This classification helps prioritize conservation efforts for species that might otherwise be overlooked.
Unique Species on the Brink
The list of at-risk plants includes both well-known and obscure species. Among them are:
- the vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia)
- the world's smallest water lily (Nymphaea thermarum)
- the giant flower Amorphophallus titanum, famous for its pungent odor

Study author Felix Forest from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, emphasizes that 'these new assessments help identify species often left out of conservation programs, even though their loss would be irreversible.' According to the study's data, more than two out of every five plant species worldwide are already threatened with extinction. This underscores the urgent need to preserve the evolutionary history of angiosperms, as Matilda Brown noted: 'If a single branch of the evolutionary tree disappears, humanity could lose potential medicines, including new cancer treatments or antibiotics.'
