A fresh breakthrough in textile engineering
An international research team from Zhengzhou University in China and the University of Adelaide in Australia has developed a high-tech violet textile designed to protect people from extreme heat. With heatwaves becoming more common worldwide, such materials could become important tools for those exposed to high temperatures. The fabric reflects about 87.6% of solar radiation, giving it a significant advantage over traditional fabrics.
Why this fabric is different
A violet metal-organic framework and zinc oxide nanoparticles are what give the material its distinctive color and performance. In outdoor tests, the textile remained 6.2 °C cooler than purple cotton and 4.2 °C cooler than white cotton. When tested on simulated human skin, the covered area was 8 °C cooler than the uncovered surface, showing that the fabric remains effective under intense heat.
The material also allows water vapor to escape, so sweat can evaporate, while remaining strongly water-repellent. This combination makes it suitable for specialized clothing for athletes, builders, and others who work outside for long periods. Its cooling properties persisted even after 50 washing cycles and UV exposure equal to 108 days of sunlight.
Published in the journal Small, the study points to a significant step forward for the textile industry and for heat-protective clothing. These results could change how garments are designed for hot environments, improving comfort and safety for outdoor workers and sports enthusiasts.
