Innovative Device Turns Air Moisture into Electricity

Scientists from London, Warwick, and Rome have created a novel device called the MEG (Moisture-Electric Generator) that can produce electricity from airborne humidity. The generator is made from gelatin, table salt, and activated charcoal. As the salt-infused gelatin dries, it self-assembles into a three-layer structure where ion movement generates an electric current. A single unit can deliver a steady volt for an entire month, and when linked together in a circuit, these units can produce up to 90 volts—enough power to illuminate a string of 40 LEDs.

Environmentally Friendly and Full of Potential

The device’s output fluctuates with humidity levels, making it sensitive to environmental changes. It has been tested as a medical monitor to track breathing in real time and can even 'hear' speech by detecting moisture variations during exhalation. Additionally, the MEG functions as a touchless proximity sensor.

A major advantage of this generator is its environmental sustainability. At the end of its lifespan, the device can be buried in soil, where it will degrade within a few weeks, or dissolved in water for component recycling. Dr. Dimitrios Papageorgiou, one of the developers, notes:
