A cosmic anomaly: triple-lobed structure identified on asteroid 44 Nysa
Astronomers have reported the first-ever detection of an asteroid with a triple-lobed shape. New observations of 44 Nysa, made using the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona and the Very Large Telescope in Chile, revealed an unusual form. The object measures roughly 75 km across and shows two depressions on its surface, which are interpreted as necks connecting separate segments. This marks the first instance in which a three-lobed asteroid has been captured.
Findings and follow-up work
The investigation was led by Kate Minker of Lowell Observatory. To produce the images, the team relied on adaptive optics and specialized image-processing methods. In addition, a satellite designated S/2026 (44) 1 was found around 44 Nysa; it is about 1 km in diameter and orbits at a minimum distance of 170 km from the primary body.
The asteroid's surface is rich in enstatite, a mineral that may point to a link with the formation of the inner planets. Researchers suggest the odd shape could have emerged from three large blocks clumping together or from an ancient collision. 44 Nysa may also preserve traces of conditions from 4.5 billion years ago, making it a valuable target for future study.
The finding opens fresh avenues for investigating how celestial bodies evolve in our Solar System. Any preserved clues could help scientists reconstruct processes that took place as planets were taking shape. It also highlights the role of advanced observational tools in probing cosmic objects, a capability that could lead to further discoveries in astronomy.
