Why Older Adults Walk More Slowly and Tire More Quickly: The Body's Safety-First Strategy

Researchers from Flinders University and the University of Canberra in Australia analyzed movement data from 107 healthy adults aged 26 to 86. Their findings point to a key age-related shift: the body increasingly chooses stability over efficiency. As people grow older, muscles around the ankle tend to contract together during each step, stiffening the joint and helping keep the body balanced when the foot lands. This subtle motor change may help explain why walking becomes slower and more tiring over time.

Stability Takes Priority

This stabilizing strategy requires more muscular work while generating less forward push. As a result, older adults often take shorter steps and walk at a gentler pace. The reduced forward push also makes it harder to recover quickly after tripping or slipping, which is one reason fall risk rises with age.

Lead researcher Cody Lindsay said the study’s findings could be used to design fall-prevention efforts and support healthy aging. The team suggests exercises that improve balance, coordination, and strength in the lower leg muscles.
