A widely available amino acid may be key to helping the immune system tackle both cancer and viruses, according to a new study.

Investigators at Rockefeller University's Laboratory of Systems Oncology Biology carried out experiments showing that arginine plays a decisive role in immune function. In findings released in the journal Cell, they report that immune cells rely on this amino acid to spot tumor cells and counter viral infections. When arginine is scarce, the production of MHC-1 proteins is interrupted, leaving T lymphocytes—the cells responsible for immune responses—unable to recognize affected cells.

What the Experiments Showed

Using cell cultures and mouse models of colon cancer, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2, the team found arginine to be the most depleted amino acid under these conditions. Without enough arginine, MHC-1 protein synthesis stalls, preventing signal molecules from reaching the cell surface. As a result, cells become effectively 'invisible' to immune defenses.

In mice, a diet low in arginine was tied to accelerated growth of colon tumors. When arginine was supplemented in moderate amounts—roughly equal to a few standard over-the-counter tablets—the number of tumors fell noticeably. In respiratory virus models, mice receiving arginine handled illness more easily and bounced back from influenza more quickly. Poor nutrition and aging, both of which lower arginine levels, appeared to increase vulnerability to malignancies and viruses.

The researchers describe arginine as an affordable and safe compound. They now intend to test it in clinical trials, both as a supportive treatment alongside cancer immunotherapy and as a preventive measure against infections for high-risk populations. The findings open new avenues for strengthening immune responses and confronting serious diseases.

The results could reshape how clinicians approach both cancer and viral infections. They also highlight arginine's potential in nutritional support and dietary recommendations for vulnerable people. Because the amino acid is inexpensive and low-risk, adding it to daily nutrition could be a straightforward way to support overall health and immune resilience. This is an early-stage finding, and the planned human trials will help determine its practical role.

In addition to arginine, another compound, creatine, has been shown to enhance the immune system's ability to combat cancer. Understanding how these substances interact with immune responses could provide further insights into developing effective treatments and preventive strategies against diseases.
