A study published in the journal PeerJ has found that the Tyrannosaurus rex continued growing until around 40 years old, eventually reaching a maximum weight of roughly eight tons. Led by anatomy professor Holly Woodward, an international team of scientists examined 17 fossilized T. rex specimens using novel techniques to determine how long these dinosaurs lived.

How the Research Was Conducted

The researchers analyzed growth rings within T. rex bones using an innovative approach that involved cutting thin sections of bone and studying them under polarized light. This method yielded more precise data on the creatures' growth rates. Earlier estimates had suggested that T. rex reached adulthood by age 25, but these new findings point to a steady, decades-long growth pattern. According to the scientists, this prolonged development allowed younger individuals to fill different ecological roles and gradually occupy new niches in their environment.

Mathematician Nathan Myhrvold developed a new statistical model that helped accurately determine the T. rex's lifespan. Unusual growth patterns in specimens known as Jane and Petey supported the theory that they may belong to a separate species called Nanotyrannus. These discoveries open up fresh avenues for understanding the ecological role of Tyrannosaurus rex during the Late Cretaceous period.

"This 40-year development period helped young individuals fill different ecological roles and gradually occupy new niches in their environment," noted Jack Horner.
