The Story of Mykola Shovkoplias

Mykola Shovkoplias, an elderly man born in 1949, recently visited the Volodymyr branch of the State Migration Service in the Volyn region to obtain a Ukrainian passport. He had previously worked as a teacher in a border village in the Sumy region, which came under constant shelling following the Russian invasion. The dangerous situation in his home village led his children to join the defense of Ukraine, and volunteers eventually persuaded Mykola himself to evacuate.

After evacuation, the man relocated to Volyn, where he now resides. However, unable to leave his past behind, he made the perilous decision to return to the dangerous zone to retrieve his cat, named Vasyl. Mykola Shovkoplias and his cat Vasyl are now living together in the Volodymyr district of the Volyn region.

'I am grateful to God that good people cross my path,' noted Mykola Antonovych Shovkoplias.

His story is a testament to the resilience and courage of people who, despite immense hardship, continue to care for their loved ones and pets. This act highlights the profound bonds people maintain with their animal companions, even in times of war.

The Role of the State Migration Service

This case also illustrates the work of the State Migration Service in providing services to citizens who have endured extreme circumstances. Mykola Shovkoplias is one of many who have turned to #DMS and #MigrationService for aid and support during wartime. His story is part of a broader context in which people across Ukraine are striving to find new opportunities for life and recovery. #FacesOfDMS

The account of Mykola Shovkoplias underscores the critical importance of humanitarian aid and social support during war, when countless individuals are forced to leave their homes and adapt to new realities. His appeal to the State Migration Service points to the necessity of securing the basic rights and needs of citizens affected by the conflict. In such situations, it is vital not only to provide material assistance but also to bolster the morale of people confronting numerous challenges.
