Host Oksana Pekun Explains the End of 'Folk-music'

Ведуча Оксана Пекун розкриває причини завершення епохи народної музики.

'Folk-music' Program Comes to an End

Oksana Pekun, the host of the program 'Folk-music,' has announced the closure of the project, which aired on Public Broadcasting from 2008 to 2018. The show gained significant popularity over its decade-long run but ceased to exist after the host was changed in 2018. Pekun stated that the program effectively 'died' following this replacement. This highlights the fragile nature of cultural programming, which often depends on the unique vision of its creators.

The Show's Mission and Its Legacy

'Folk-music' was dedicated to reviving traditional Ukrainian folk songs and promoting authentic music. Oksana Pekun, who hosted the show for its entire duration, emphasized that her genuine connection with people was the key to the project's success. According to Pekun, a format change implemented by the channel's management led to the program's termination, a process overseen by the show's director and producer, Oleksandr Kovalenko.

Oksana Pekun also noted that the program's team now works on YouTube but dreams of reviving 'Folk-music' in its full, original format. The host expressed hope that after the war ends, the team can realize this 'wonderful, colorful, and vibrant project' once more. 'Folk-music' left a notable mark on Ukraine's musical landscape, and its closure was a significant loss for fans of folk music.

The end of 'Folk-music' marks the conclusion of one of Ukrainian Public Broadcasting's most successful projects, which made a substantial contribution to popularizing folk music in Ukraine. The shifts in management and format underscore the challenges cultural initiatives face amidst rapid changes in the media environment. Oksana Pekun's hopes for the program's revival speak to the enduring importance of traditional music for Ukrainian cultural identity, especially during times of national crisis.
