Operation to Capture the Tanker Bella I

The United Kingdom assisted the USA in capturing the sanctioned tanker Bella I, which was heading to Russia. The operation involved air support and naval escort, highlighting the close collaboration between allies in countering violations of international sanctions.

The tanker Bella I, also known as Marinera, was seized during this operation. It last docked in Venezuela or was en route there. The vessel is listed in the state register of ships of the Russian Federation and operates under the state flag of Russia, with its home port in Sochi. During the operation, the United Kingdom deployed the supply tanker RFA Tideforce, and the Royal Air Force provided aerial surveillance of the situation.

Reaction from Russia

In response to the capture, Russia deployed a submarine and other naval vessels to escort the tanker Bella I. The Russian government also sent a diplomatic note to the USA, requesting to cease the pursuit of the tanker.

“Today, our armed forces in the United Kingdom demonstrated high professionalism and skill by supporting the successful interception of the ship Bella I by the USA en route to Russia”

John Gilly, representative of the armed forces of the United Kingdom

This operation highlights the importance of international cooperation in ensuring compliance with sanctions and combating illegal shipments that may threaten global security. The capture of the tanker Bella I also illustrates the growing tension between Western countries and Russia, as the latter continues to ignore international sanctions imposed in response to its actions in Ukraine and other regions. Such measures may be part of a broader strategy of Western allies aimed at deterring Russian aggression in international waters and supporting global security.
