Ukraine and the UK Forge a Pioneering Defense Partnership
The United Kingdom has emerged as Ukraine’s inaugural international partner, granting its defense companies exclusive access to the innovative Avengers Labs platform. This collaboration enables the training of artificial intelligence models for unmanned systems using authentic battlefield data. The partnership was formalized through an agreement signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Up to 12 UK defense firms will be selected through a competitive process managed by the UK Ministry of Defence to participate in the program.
What Avengers Labs Brings to the Table
Developed in Ukraine, Avengers Labs offers a secure environment where participants can test and refine their AI algorithms without direct exposure to the underlying datasets. The platform relies on an annotated dataset containing over 5 million frames captured in combat zones. These anonymized and time-delayed data streams come from unmanned systems integrated with the DELTA combat system. The dataset covers a variety of targets, including:
- Enemy tanks
- Artillery units
- Air defense systems
- Infantry forces
- Airborne objects, such as 'Shahed' drones and reconnaissance UAVs
Constant updates ensure the dataset remains current and comprehensive.
The collaboration aims to foster the development of advanced AI models capable of coordinating drone swarms to detect threats and enemy targets under challenging combat conditions. The initial competition focuses on creating AI solutions designed to operate unmanned systems effectively amid limited communication and navigation capabilities. Oversight of the selection process is led by the UK Ministry of Defence’s Rapid AI Delivery Task Force (RAID). From the applicants, up to 12 companies meeting criteria from both the UK and Ukrainian defense ministries will be chosen. The selection is expected to conclude within weeks, after which successful companies will gain platform access, contingent upon compliance with Ukrainian export control regulations.
