UK and Nine European Nations Launch New Naval Coalition to Counter Russia

Кораблі Великої Британії та ще дев'яти європейських держав об'єднують зусилля для забезпечення безпеки на морі та протидії російській агресії.

Formation of a Multinational Naval Task Force

The United Kingdom, together with nine other European countries, has agreed to establish a multinational naval force that will operate alongside NATO. Members of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) signed a declaration of intent to create these new naval capabilities, driven by growing concerns over Russian aggression. Command and control will be based at the British armed forces headquarters in Northwood, near London.

Participating States and the Russian Threat

The initiative includes the following nations:

  • United Kingdom
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • The three Baltic states

Canada is also being considered for membership. During the signing ceremony, officials stressed the severity of the threat posed by Russia.

“Russia remains the most serious threat to our security,” said Gwyn Jenkins, highlighting the need for the new naval force to be ready for action. He added:
“It must be prepared to fight immediately if necessary—with real capabilities, real military plans, and real integration.”

Incursions by Russian vessels into UK waters have increased by nearly a third over the past two years, underscoring the urgency of enhanced security measures. In response, the UK plans to boost its capabilities through the use of maritime drones. Additionally, Ukrainian military personnel are undergoing another phase of training in the UK as part of an international training operation. The training covers combat first aid, massive hemorrhage control, airway management, tension pneumothorax decompression, and casualty evacuation following tactical combat casualty care protocols.

This new multinational structure is expected to become a key component in strengthening collective security in the region, demonstrating the readiness of European nations to jointly counter external threats. Given Russia’s increasing military activity in the area, the creation of these naval forces could significantly reshape the strategic landscape in Northern Europe, providing additional defense mechanisms for participating countries. The initiative also stands to deepen military cooperation among the states, a crucial factor in addressing today’s security challenges.

As tensions escalate in the region, it's crucial to understand the broader implications of military strategies against Russian advancements.
