Ukrainian Ambassador Meets Heads of Ukrainian Schools Across the UK
Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, recently met with leaders of Ukrainian schools and educational centers from across the UK. The discussion focused on supporting Ukrainian education abroad, preserving children's national identity, advancing Ukrainian schools, and exploring future cooperation in education and science. Attendees emphasized the vital role these schools play in long-term efforts to maintain Ukrainian cultural identity overseas.
I had the privilege to connect with heads of Ukrainian schools and educational spaces from all corners of the UK. According to Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science, these institutions rank among the top verified Ukrainian schools abroad, reflecting a vibrant and engaged Ukrainian educational community in Britain.

The meeting also addressed key topics such as teacher support, engaging youth and alumni in the educational process—critical factors for the continued growth of Ukrainian schools.
Introduction of the GCSE Ukrainian Language Exam
A significant development is the UK’s decision to offer a GCSE exam in the Ukrainian language starting September 2028. This qualification will be available to students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a standard British qualification taken by pupils aged 15-16 after completing compulsory secondary education. GCSE results are important for future academic admissions and employment opportunities.
By introducing a Ukrainian language GCSE, children displaced by the war who have resettled in the UK will be able to maintain a connection with their native language and culture. This initiative also opens doors for new collaborative projects in education and science within the framework of the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the UK. Such efforts will help nurture Ukrainian education abroad and reinforce national identity among Ukrainian youth living in Britain.
This meeting and the launch of the Ukrainian GCSE highlight the UK’s commitment to supporting the Ukrainian diaspora during ongoing conflict. These measures lay the groundwork for deeper integration of Ukrainian culture into the British education system, helping young Ukrainians preserve their linguistic heritage. Moreover, participation of Ukrainian schools in the UK’s education framework creates promising avenues for bilateral cooperation in science and education.
