Venezuela Frees Political Detainees
Venezuela has released more than 30 individuals considered political prisoners. The interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a legislative initiative for amnesty on Friday, which could affect hundreds of detainees. On Sunday, the release of 33 such prisoners was confirmed. According to the human rights group Foro Penal, 344 political prisoners have been freed since the start of January. The Venezuelan government cites a higher figure of over 600 releases, though this number may include individuals freed in previous years. These releases occur amid a prolonged political and economic crisis in the country.
Human Rights Concerns and International Reactions
Among those freed was human rights defender Javier Tarazona, who had been imprisoned since mid-2021 in the Helicoide detention center. UN reports have alleged that detainees at Helicoide were subjected to torture, accusations the Venezuelan government has rejected. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez also criticized Washington, urging foreign states to cease interference in Venezuela's internal affairs.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington is effectively taking control of Venezuela's energy resources.
This move followed the recent ousting of the regime of Nicolás Maduro. Trump promised that the country would soon receive more money than it has in the last two decades.
The release of political prisoners may signal a shift in Venezuela's domestic policy, particularly against a backdrop of international pressure and criticism from human rights organizations. The amnesty initiative could represent a government attempt to improve its image and reduce internal social tension. However, Delcy Rodríguez's comments on foreign intervention highlight the complex state of Venezuela's relations with other nations, particularly the United States, which continues to intensify the political crisis in the region.
