Appointment of Yevheniy Khmara as Minister of Defense
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appointed Yevheniy Khmara as Minister of Defense. His candidacy was supported by 312 members of parliament. Khmara, who has been performing the duties of the minister since July 20, noted that his main priorities in the new position will be:
- the front and strengthening the military;
- people;
- the development of the defense industry.
Action Program of Yevheniy Khmara
During the presentation of his program, Yevheniy Khmara emphasized the development of deep strike and middle strike capabilities, increasing the production of Ukrainian weapons, and implementing technologies that will ensure superiority on the battlefield. He stressed that forcing the enemy to peace can only be achieved through the strength of our military, using technological and symmetrical solutions.
“We have erased the distance. There are no safe zones for the facilities that fuel the Russian war. For the first time in history, we are striking even in Siberia.” - Yevheniy Khmara
Khmara also added that “the Russian defense-industrial complex, military logistics, fuel infrastructure: the entire economic base of the enemy is our targets. Action must be taken quickly.”
The Cabinet of Ministers dismissed Khmara from the position of Deputy Minister of Defense and Acting Minister, while Order No. 796 dated August 19 revoked the decision on the temporary performance of the duties of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. President Zelensky dismissed Yevheniy Khmara from positions in the Security Service of Ukraine on July 17. During the discussion of Khmara's appointment, former President Petro Poroshenko criticized the parliamentary majority for its long absence from work during the war.
Thus, the appointment of Yevheniy Khmara as Minister of Defense was an important step in the context of the ongoing war, which requires active actions and decisive changes in Ukraine's military strategy. The development of the Ukrainian defense industry and new technologies can become key factors in strengthening the country's defense capabilities and achieving strategic goals in the fight against the aggressor.
