Mentorship Law in Ukraine
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Mentorship Law No. 13200 on December 18, which regulates mentoring activities. The law was passed with the support of 259 votes 'in favor.' It establishes mentorship as a free voluntary activity aimed at supporting and developing mentees.
Main provisions of the law
In particular, the new law defines categories of individuals for whom mentorship may be conducted. It also introduces individual and corporate mentorship, which expands opportunities for engaging volunteers. Requirements for candidates for mentors are established, as well as criteria for exclusion from this activity.
Moreover, the law provides for the creation of a social service for organizing mentorship, which will allow for more effective coordination of this activity. Mechanisms for accounting, monitoring, support, and state oversight will be implemented to ensure quality control of mentorship.
The adoption of the mentorship law is an important step in the development of social services in Ukraine, as it encourages the involvement of volunteers in supporting vulnerable groups of the population. Given that mentorship can positively impact the development of children and youth, as well as the integration of people with disabilities into society, this law may serve as a foundation for creating a more supportive environment in the country. Next steps in the implementation of the law may include:
- preparing training for mentors;
- developing programs that meet the needs of mentees.
