Dismissal of Vasyl Malyuk from the position of head of the SBU
The Verkhovna Rada made a decision to dismiss Vasyl Malyuk from the position of head of the Security Service of Ukraine. This decision was supported by 235 members of parliament. This was an important step in changing the leadership of the SBU, which may affect the organization of the service's work in the face of modern challenges.
Vasyl Malyuk resigned on January 5, after which on January 12, the parliamentary committee considered the president's submission regarding his dismissal but did not support it. However, the issue was resolved at the level of parliamentary voting, and President Volodymyr Zelensky signed decree No. 18/2026, which establishes the new structure of the leadership of the Security Service of Ukraine.
Appointment of a new head of the SBU
After the dismissal of Vasyl Malyuk, President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Yevhen Khmara as acting head of the SBU. Noting his departure from office, Vasyl Malyuk emphasized:
'Today I officially leave the position of Head of the SBU. I leave with my head held high.' Vasyl Malyuk
He also expressed hope that the new leader would be able to continue and strengthen his achievements, calling him 'a person of a new generation.'
The change in leadership of the Security Service of Ukraine occurs against the backdrop of growing challenges faced by the country, including external aggression and internal threats. The appointment of a new head of the SBU may indicate the government's intention to adapt security strategies to new realities and ensure more effective operation of the service.
